Mirror Indy Social Media Strategist
The Role

Mirror Indy is looking for a social media strategist who can help our newsroom take a creative, innovative approach to reaching as many Indy residents as possible, especially in communities historically underserved by mainstream news media. 

You’ll serve in a player-coach role, creating your own original content while also collaborating with reporters to help translate their stories and execute their ideas for different platforms and audiences. 

Mirror Indy, a nonprofit, independent news organization, launched in December 2023 to provide free, community-centered journalism and fill in local news gaps. The team reports on the issues that residents care most about, including government, housing, jobs, education, health, neighborhoods and arts and culture. 

The social media strategist will report to the managing editor of innovation and be part of a team that includes the art director, web producer, arts & culture editor and reporters.

Responsibilities & Priorities
  • Plan, implement, schedule and publish daily content across multiple channels. 
  • Plan, create and publish content for special projects. 
  • Develop a voice and tone for our social media platforms that is solutions-focused, inclusive and approachable. 
  • Monitor discussions, posts and comments across different channels.
  • Take the lead to propose new initiatives to help us grow our reach and impact. Research social media best practices, changes and trends from around the news industry as well as other consumer-facing industries. 
  • Work with the audience development director and managing editor of innovation to set and track goals and use data to inform our strategy. Share insights and recommendations with the newsroom. 
  • Work with freelancers who can create or edit content as needed to support our goals and strategy. 
  • Occasionally cover live events. Work evenings as needed.

Consider applying if you have some of these skill sets:

  • Demonstrated commitment to local public service journalism with experience producing and/or leading impactful reporting.
  • Experience creating social media content that attracts an audience, or managing social media accounts for a news outlet or nonprofit. 
  • Writing and editing skills. 
  • Experience with graphic design tools such as Canva and video editing software. 
  • Ability to work under deadlines and organize your workflow.
  • Interpersonal/communications skills - willing to negotiate and talk through issues in an honest and clear manner
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of individuals internal and external to the newsroom.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary: Minimum $55,000 commensurate with experience.
  • Benefits: Full health benefits, including employee’s medical premium covered 100%; paid leave including two weeks of closures during the year for all staff, generous personal time policy, and a 401K with a 4% match.
  • Training: $2,000 stipend toward outside training and professional development opportunities.‍
  • Hybrid role: Employee has the option to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays and is required to join the team in person at our Indianapolis office Tuesday-Thursday.

What to expect in the hiring process

We hope to fill this role as soon as possible. We will do our best to communicate with you about timing and expectations. Semi-finalists will be asked to complete a written (paid) assignment designed to help us understand your thinking and approach to the role. Finalists can expect 2-3 interviews, including with newsroom leadership and reporters.
